A review of 11 human studies covering 632 participants found red light therapy to be effective for dry eyes. The CURE Index scored this condition 84 out of 100, indicating strong confidence.
Red light therapy, often paired with intense pulsed light, was associated with more stable, longer-lasting tears and fewer dry-eye symptoms.
The 11 studies included 4 randomized controlled trials, 4 clinical trials, and 3 observational studies. 9 studies reported effective outcomes and 2 reported partially effective outcomes.

14 Human Studies on Red Light Therapy for Dry Eyes
Light Therapy Before and After Cataract Surgery Eased Dry Eye
Researchers in 2025 ran a randomized controlled trial of low-level light therapy (LLLT) given around cataract surgery against a sham to prevent dry eye afterward, following 89 of 98 patients averaging 74 years of age. The treatment group received 623 to 643 nm light around the eyes twice a week for the week before and the week after surgery, while the sham group did not, with tear and symptom measures at baseline, 1 week, and 1 month. The light group appeared to improve more than the sham group in symptoms and tear-film stability at 1 week and 1 month, with a smaller change in tear saltiness and none in tear volume. No adverse effects were reported.

Study Title: Effect of Low-Level Light Therapy on Ocular Surface Parameters in Patients Undergoing Cataract Surgery: A Prospective Double-Masked Randomized Controlled Clinical Trial.
Pulsed-Light Treatments Ranked Highest for Dry Eye Symptom Relief
3455 patients pooled from 45 randomized trials showed the strongest symptom relief with pulsed-light treatments for dry eye in a 2025 systematic review and network meta-analysis of technology-based care. The light-based treatments it pooled spanned about 500 to 1200 nm, applied over courses of 14 to 28 days. The review compared pulsed light, low-level light therapy (LLLT), and several other device and non-device options at 1 to 2 months after treatment. It found that pulsed-light treatments, including pulsed light combined with red light, were linked to better tear-film stability and fewer symptoms. The gains were short-term, and longer head-to-head studies are still needed.

633 nm Light Alone Improved Tear Film in Dry Eye
2024 brought a clinical trial testing 633 nm low-level light therapy (LLLT) on its own for mild to moderate dry eye in 30 adults averaging 31 years of age. Each person received 15 minutes of red light to one eye at 3 visits about a week apart, with tear-film and symptom measures taken before and after. Symptom scores fell, and several tear-film measures appeared to improve, while surface damage and oil-gland loss stayed the same. The gains showed up early, within the first 2 weeks of treatment.

Study Title: Effect of low-level light therapy in individuals with dry eye disease.
Dry Eye Symptoms Stayed Better 6 Months After Light Therapy
According to a 2023 observational study, adding low-level light therapy (LLLT) to intense pulsed light gave dry eye patients a longer-lasting benefit. The study treated 176 eyes across 3 device groups, applying pulsed light with or without 5 to 15 minutes of 500 to 1200 and 620 to 780 nm light to the upper and lower eyelids, with checks at 3 weeks and 6 months. The study found that symptoms improved in every group by 3 weeks and held at 6 months, and only the group that also received red light kept gaining afterward. That pointed to an added long-term benefit from the red light.

Study Title: Comparison of Light-Based Devices in the Treatment of Meibomian Gland Dysfunction.
100 Dry Eye Patients Improved on Combined Light Therapy
When researchers paired low-level light therapy (LLLT) with intense pulsed light for dry eye caused by blocked oil glands letting tears evaporate too quickly, a 2023 randomized controlled trial compared 50 treated patients against 50 who received a sham, aged 22 to 78 (average about 48). The treated group had 3 sittings on days 1, 15, and 30, each pairing 5 pulses of intense pulsed light around the eyes with 15 minutes under a near-infrared light mask, with the energy set by how blocked the oil glands were and by skin tone, and both groups were reassessed 1 and 2 months later. The trial found that dry-eye symptom scores and tear-film stability improved significantly more in the treated group than in the sham group, while tear production did not change and the oil glands released oil a little more easily without reaching significance. The gains appeared to build across the 3 sessions, and no side effects or complications were reported.

Whether adding low-level light therapy (LLLT) to intense pulsed light helps more than pulsed light alone was tested in a 2022 clinical trial of dry eye from blocked oil glands. 62 patients, split into 2 groups of 31, received 3 sessions: one group got pulsed light followed by 15 minutes of 620 to 780 nm red light, and the other pulsed light alone, with checks 3 weeks after the last session. Both groups improved in symptoms and in the oily layer of the tear film, while only the combined group appeared to gain in tear production, a benefit the study rated as weak. No significant side effects were noted.

Patients received 2 to 5 sessions of 620 to 780 nm and 1200 to 1500 nm light and were reassessed 3 to 5 weeks after the last one. According to the study, tear-film stability rose from about 7 to 9 seconds, oil-gland severity scores dropped, and 90% of eyes moved to a lower severity band. No eye or facial side effects were noted.

Study Title: Optimized combined low level light therapy and intense pulsed light therapy for the treatment of dry eye syndrome caused by Meibomian glands dysfunction.
Active Light Outperformed Placebo on Dry Eye Surface Damage

Dry eye disease stood among the conditions with the firmest evidence for light therapy, according to a 2025 review of eye uses of photobiomodulation (PBM). The review sorted uses of red and near-infrared light in the 620 to 780 nm range into established ones, including dry eye and a form of macular degeneration, and still-experimental ones such as diabetes-related swelling at the back of the eye. The authors concluded that the therapy is promising for dry eye but that its long-term benefit and safety are not yet proven. Larger controlled trials and standard treatment guidelines are still needed.

Study Title: Photobiomodulation: evidence and applications in ophthalmology.
Light Therapy and Warm Compress Warmed Dry Eye Lids Equally
No greater warming than a warm compress followed light therapy in a 2024 randomized controlled trial of eyelid temperature and tear-film stability in mild dry eye. 35 adults averaging 27 years of age were split into a 633 nm light-mask group treated for 15 minutes, a warm-compress group treated for 10 minutes, and an inactive-mask control, with eyelid temperature and tear-film stability measured before and after a single session. A single light session raised eyelid temperature right away, though the increase appeared no greater than the warm compress produced. This hinted that warming may be part of how the therapy works.

It noted few safety concerns, while cautioning that some devices may heat the tissue enough to fall outside true light therapy.
