In healthy older eyes that time grew shorter, but in eyes with AMD it did not, so the benefit appeared limited to eyes without the disease.

No significant gain in sharpness of vision from photobiomodulation (PBM) showed up in a 2025 meta-analysis of dry macular degeneration (AMD). The trials it pooled used light from 505 to 850 nm in sessions up to 10 minutes, given 2 to 10 times per week. It pooled 6 studies with 360 patients and 477 eyes, finding wide variation between them. The authors concluded that, so far, the therapy shows no clear clinical benefit and called for longer trials.
