Researchers Reported Light Therapy Serves Better Airflow in Nasal Allergy

In 2025, a randomized placebo-controlled double-blind trial in Brazil tested photobiomodulation therapy (PBMT) for nasal allergy. 62 patients received 8 sessions over 1 month, with 33 given 6 J of red and near-infrared light inside the nose plus 1 J of infrared to the outside of the nose, and 29 given an inactive device. A measure of how freely air moves through the nose improved, blocked-nose scores eased, and symptom control gained ground, while sense of smell did not change. The authors concluded that PBMT may be an effective and safe option for nasal allergy.

Study Title: Efficacy of Using Photobiomodulation Therapy in Allergic Rhinitis: A Placebo-Controlled Randomized Clinical Trial.

All Patients Reported Less Hay Fever With Nasal Light

All 20 patients improved their nasal symptom scores after using a red light nasal device in a 2023 case series in the United States. The patients, averaging 35 years of age, gave each nostril a 10-second dose of 650 to 690 nm light twice a day for 10 days, at 12 to 24 J/cm². 40% of them brought their nasal-symptom score down to zero, and the device appeared easy to tolerate, with 95% finding it comfortable and 85% finding it easy to use.

Study Title: Twenty cases of perennial and seasonal allergic rhinitis treated with LumiMed® Nasal Device.

Nasal Symptoms Fell Within a Week in Hay Fever Patients

21 adults with mild hay fever, 6 men and 15 women with a median age of 42, took part in a single-group 2023 clinical trial of low-power light therapy in South Korea. A device holding 660 nm red and 940 nm near-infrared LEDs at 5 mW was placed in both nostrils 3 times a day for 4 weeks. Sneezing improved in 52% of patients, itching in 57%, and a runny nose in 48%, and overall symptom and quality-of-life ratings tended to improve by the second and fourth weeks, with a runny and blocked nose easing within about a week. 1 patient reported a dry nose for around 2 days, and no serious side effects occurred.

A 2022 randomized controlled trial in South Korea compared low-level laser therapy (LLLT) inside the nose with acupuncture for hay fever. 80 patients were split between the two treatments, each given for 20 minutes 3 times a week over 4 weeks, and both groups improved their nasal-symptom scores, with gains lasting 4 weeks after treatment ended. The trial found the nasal laser was no less effective than acupuncture on nasal-symptom scores, and the two matched on quality of life, a blood marker linked to allergies, and a type of white blood cell tied to allergies.

Study Title: Intranasal low-level laser therapy versus acupuncture treatment for allergic rhinitis: A randomized, noninferiority trial.

Effective

Low-Level Laser Outperformed Sham for Nasal Allergy Symptoms

Comparing low-level laser therapy (LLLT) against a sham, a 2021 randomized double-blind trial in South Korea tested light for year-round nasal allergy. Of 67 patients randomized, 41 were analysed: 22 received 670 and 830 nm light at 3 and 20 mW inside the nose for 20 minutes twice a day over 4 weeks, and 19 received a sham. Researchers found that nasal-symptom scores fell further with the laser, from about 7.1 to 3.3, than with sham, from 6.2 to 4.7. No serious adverse events were reported during the study.

Whether laser acupuncture could ease hay fever in children was tested in a 2019 randomized trial in Egypt. 60 children aged 4 to 18 were split between standard allergy medication, made up of nasal steroids, antihistamines, and leukotriene blockers, and 12 sessions of 904 nm laser at 100 mW and 6 J applied to acupuncture points twice a week over 6 weeks. According to the trial, symptom severity improved significantly in both groups, and a blood marker of inflammation fell in both, more so with laser acupuncture. The authors described laser acupuncture as painless, non-invasive, and a useful add-on treatment.

Study Title: A comparative pilot study of symptom improvement before and after phototherapy in Korean patients with perennial allergic rhinitis.

Nasal Phototherapy Reduced Seasonal Hay Fever More Than an Antihistamine

Researchers in Hungary compared intranasal phototherapy with the antihistamine fexofenadine for moderate to severe seasonal hay fever in a 2011 randomized trial. The 31 patients were split between 18 in the light group, 12 women and 6 men, averaging 41 years of age, who received 700 nm light inside the nose at 180 mW and about 1.1 to 1.6 J/cm² 3 times over 14 days, and 13 who took fexofenadine daily. Total nasal symptom scores fell from about 8.6 to 4.6 with phototherapy, a statistically significant drop, whereas the antihistamine showed no significant change. Mild, short-lived nasal dryness was the main side effect in the light group.

Study Title: Intranasal phototherapy is more effective than fexofenadine hydrochloride in the treatment of seasonal allergic rhinitis: results of a pilot study.

Red Light Therapy Significantly Improved Hay Fever

72% of hay fever patients reported better symptoms after narrow-band red light therapy in a 1997 double-blind randomized controlled trial in Israel. Of 90 participants, those with hay fever or soft nasal growths received 660 nm light aimed at the lining inside the nose for 4.4 minutes, 3 times a day over 14 days, delivering about 6 J per day, while a smaller group received a matching sham light. Symptom relief and better findings on a camera examination of the nose appeared far more common with light, in 72% and 70% of treated hay fever patients, than with sham, in 24% and 3%. No benefit was seen in participants who had soft nasal growths.

Study Title: Narrow-band red light phototherapy in perennial allergic rhinitis and nasal polyposis.

Red Light Did Not Improve Nasal Airflow in Hay Fever

No lasting improvement in nasal airflow followed a single session of red light phototherapy in a 2018 randomized controlled trial in Taiwan. 60 patients with hay fever were assigned to one 650 to 670 nm nasal light session plus standard medication, or to medication alone, and nasal airflow was measured with tests of nasal airflow and space before and after. Symptoms, including a blocked nose, eased 30 minutes after the light but had largely returned 2 days later, with sneezing worse. The treatment appeared to bring no lasting improvement in how freely air moved through the nose.
