In study after study, red light therapy was associated with lower sinus symptom scores and better nasal airflow, with relief that often held for months. That was recorded across 7 human studies and 608 participants, earning a verdict of effective and a CURE Index score of 80 out of 100, indicating strong confidence.

7 Human Studies on Red Light Therapy for Sinus Infection
Light Therapy Lowered Sinus Cloudiness and Symptoms, Trial Found
In 2024, a randomized controlled trial in Egypt tested photobiomodulation (PBM) against a sham for long-lasting sinus inflammation. 31 patients received 904 nm light at 2.5 J, applied to 8 points over the nose and sinuses for 10 minutes per session across 12 sessions, or a sham. Researchers found that headache, fatigue, and sinus cloudiness on a scan improved significantly more with PBM than with sham.

Long-Lasting Sinus Inflammation Responded to Real Laser Over Sham
34% of symptom improvement came with real low-level laser therapy (LLLT), against 5% with a sham, in a 2022 single-blind trial of long-lasting sinus inflammation. The 14 patients, 12 of them men with an average age of 40, first had 5 sham sessions and then 5 active sessions of 830 nm light at 30 mW, applied for 33 seconds to 6 points over the cheeks and forehead. Symptom scores appeared to improve significantly more after the real laser than after the sham.

Study Title: Use of low-level laser therapy for patients with chronic rhinosinusitis: a single-blind, sham-controlled clinical trial.
Symptoms and Nasal Airflow Improved in Chronic Sinus Infection
A 2015 clinical trial tested low-level laser therapy (LLLT) given inside the mouth for chronic sinus infection behind the cheek in 20 patients. The 810 nm diode laser was applied along the upper gum, below the cheek sinus, in 8 sessions every other day, delivering 4 to 7 J/cm² over 40 minutes. The trial found that all symptoms improved significantly, resistance to airflow through the nose dropped, and airflow rose, with the gains holding steady 6 months later.

Sinus Infection Symptoms Fell 46% After Low-Level Laser
Combined symptom scores fell by 46% after 4 weeks of low-level laser therapy (LLLT) in a 2013 pilot study of 15 adults with long-lasting sinus inflammation. Light at 830 nm and 30 mW was applied to the skin over the sinuses behind the cheeks and forehead, at 6 points per sinus for 33 seconds each, 3 times a week across 10 sessions. Scores had already dropped 39% by 2 weeks, and the benefit lasted about 5 months on average. The authors concluded that this non-invasive laser approach improved symptoms in these patients.

Study Title: A pilot study into the effect of low-level laser therapy in patients with chronic rhinosinusitis.
Two Light Treatments Equally Eased Long-Lasting Sinus Inflammation
Comparing two light-based treatments, a 2011 randomized trial tested near-infrared laser therapy for long-lasting sinus inflammation in 23 patients whose symptoms persisted after surgery. One group received 940 nm laser light, while the other had a light-activated dye followed by an 810 nm laser, applied to the nose and sinuses for 3 to 4 minutes. Both groups showed similar, statistically significant gains on a sinus-symptom questionnaire and a camera examination of the nose, and the benefit lasted at least 2 months. Side effects were minimal, and the treatment did not appear to disturb the nose's natural cleaning action.

Children With Sinus and Other ENT Conditions Improved After Laser
445 children aged 2 to 15 were treated with combined red and infrared laser therapy for a range of ear, nose, and throat conditions in a 2006 clinical study. Nearly 200 of them had swollen adenoids or long-lasting sinus inflammation, while the rest had hay fever, tonsillitis, or ear infections, and the light was applied to the ear, nose, and throat area. The study found positive results in 85% of the children across these conditions.

No Symptom or Recovery Benefit From Laser for Sinus Infection
No benefit over placebo followed low-level laser therapy (LLLT) in a 1991 double-blind randomized controlled trial of sinus infection in Denmark. 60 patients from general practice had each sinus treated with 830 nm light at 30 mW for 90 seconds across 3 sessions, while a matched group received a placebo, and researchers tracked pain, general well-being, and how long the illness lasted. The treatment appeared to make no difference to symptoms or recovery time compared with placebo.
