THE CURE INDEX
Helio Cure's evidence score based on human clinical trials for red light therapy.
Skin tightening refers to a cosmetic concern in which the skin loses firmness and develops a loose or sagging appearance.
Red light therapy was found to be effective for skin tightening across a review of 5 human studies covering 199 participants. The CURE Index scored this condition 98 out of 100, indicating strong confidence.
Participants reported improvements in skin firmness, wrinkle appearance, and skin texture across all the reviewed studies.
The 5 studies included 2 randomized controlled trials, 1 clinical trial, and 2 observational studies. All 5 studies reported effective outcomes.
The most effective wavelengths were 633 nm and 650 nm, within a tested range of 275 to 1064 nm. Sessions ranged from 3 seconds to 21 minutes, applied 3 to 12 times per week over therapy periods of 20 to 56 days.

5 Human Studies on Red Light Therapy for Skin Tightening
Light Therapy Found Effective for Wrinkle Reduction Regardless of Weekly Frequency
In 2025, a randomized, human, sham-controlled, double-blind clinical trial compared 2 light treatment schedules for facial rejuvenation. One group received 3 sessions a week, another group received 2 sessions a week, and a third group received a sham treatment that mimicked the light therapy without delivering it. The study was conducted on 95 women aged 45 to 60 who used a red LED mask for 21 minutes per session over 28 days. The mask delivered light at 650 to 670 nm, with a light intensity of 6.4 mW/cm2 and a total light dose of 8.05 J/cm2, applied to the forehead, the area between the eyebrows, and both areas around the eyes. Researchers found no noticeable difference between groups in wrinkle scoring done by specialists, but image analysis showed shorter wrinkles between the eyebrows and around the right eye in both treated groups compared to the sham group. Patient satisfaction scores were also significantly higher in the 3-times-weekly group (79.6%) and the 2-times-weekly group (73.4%) than in the sham group.

3D Micro-LED Review Highlights Potential for Skin Tightening
Researchers published a 2025 review article looking at the use of 3D µLEDs for cosmetic and medical light treatment, including skin tightening. The article described 3 key device features, the ability to change shape, the ability to adjust to body movement, and the ability to track and target multiple layers of tissue at once, that allow 3D µLEDs to stay in close contact with curved and moving body surfaces for more effective light delivery. It was suggested that these design features may improve treatment results for skin and other light-based treatments compared to flat, 2D LED devices. At the end, it was concluded that more research is needed to confirm these benefits in humans.

Near-Infrared Laser Produced Firmer, Smoother Skin in Japanese Patients
50 Japanese patients took part in a 2011 observational study testing near-infrared (NIR) 1064 nm laser therapy for skin tightening. Each patient received treatment to the cheeks with the NIR laser, delivered at a pulse frequency of 7 Hz and a fluence of 14 J/cm2, 3 times a week for 56 days. Significant improvement was reported in objective measures of pore size, skin texture, and wrinkles, along with high patient satisfaction reaching as high as 100% for skin texture. No treatment-related adverse events were reported.

Facial Photoaging Improved With Combination Red and Infrared LED Therapy
81% of subjects reported improvement in wrinkles around the eyes after a 2005 human clinical trial tested a combination of LED light therapy for facial skin rejuvenation. 31 participants with facial wrinkles received 9 treatments using the Omnilux LED system, combining 633 nm light at 105 mW/cm2 and 126 J/cm2 with 830 nm light at 55 mW/cm2 and 66 J/cm2, with each session lasting 20 minutes over a therapy period of 35 days. By week 12, researchers reported significant differences in key skin surface measurements, and 52% of participants showed a 25 to 50% improvement in skin aging scores.

Red Light Therapy Showed Mixed Results for Skin Tightening
A single-blinded, human, randomized controlled trial published in 2005 evaluated the effect of LED-based red light therapy on skin tightening. 23 volunteers had one half of the face treated with light at 627 to 633 nm, an irradiance of 80 mW/cm2, and a fluence of 96 J/cm2 for 20 minutes per session, given 9 times over 21 days, while the other half of the face served as an untreated control. Researchers reported that 91% of participants noticed visible changes, and blinded photo assessments found a clinical response in 59%, though objective elasticity and hydration measurements did not show a statistically significant difference. The treatment was reported as well tolerated with no side effects noted.
